KING – Imperial Majesty (feat. The Band of the Hawk) by Skope • January 5, 2015 “Imperial Majesty” is all about being smooth: smooth flows and smooth samples. KING has impeccable taste in how each song is arranged. As KING states in “Bulletproof Wallet”: It’s that smooth shit right here. The number of references thrown into the mix is incredible. Kaleidoscopic at times it is an incredible assortment showing off KING’s knowledge of those to pay tribute to while moving the sound forward into the future. Handling the pieces this way allows the songs sparkle and shine. KING “Crabs”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHhl1-e4Fsk Opening up with “Intro” the samples bounce around right down as KING references Steely Dan and Gil Scott-Heron. This nicely introduces the kind of style used throughout the album: 70s samples seem to be preferred, the more idyllic the better. “Pyramid Writing” continues this theme with a rather triumphant feel. For the more surreal work there is the acid-treated sample of “Dreamin”. Shadows return on the dark “Bank Robbaz” as the song’s rhythm matches the chaotic narrative. Moving into delightfully playful territory is the celebratory “Tape Rock” which is one of the wilder pieces on the collection. By far the highlight is the aforementioned “Bulletproof Wallet” where everything on the song syncs up perfectly. Ending things off on strong note is the powerful “Worm 50”. The charm of “Imperial Majesty” rests with the ability of KING to develop mood and tell a story. This placed alongside a careful selection of samples makes it a truly enjoyable experience. http://www.bandofthehawk.com/ Posted by Beach Sloth – http://beachsloth.blogspot.com/ ” - The Beach Sloth

LP REVIEW "THE LAST TEMPTATION" BY MUSICEYEREVIEWS January 19, 2015 LOOKS LIKE THE WORLD IS FINALLY CATCHING UP TO US.  MUSICEYEREVIEWS SENT US A REVIEW OF OUR LAST JOINT EFFORT "THE LAST TMEPTATION" TODAY.  WE THOUGHT WE SHOULD SHARE IT WITH OUR HAWKS, LET YALL KNOW WE IN THIS THANG!! #BOHUP CLICK THE LINK OR READ BELOW http://www.musiceyereviews.com/blog/new-music-from-the-band-of-the-hawk   NEW MUSIC FROM THE BAND OF THE HAWK 1/19/2015  0 COMMENTS Describing the sound of the Texas-based rap quartet known as the Band of the Hawk comes easily  - like any great or lasting endeavor–once the foundation has been formed.  Take a generation of music fans raised on the excess and conscious experimentation of 1980’s music, which survived the ravages of divorce and Reaganomics with heavy doses of global spirituality, SF movies, comic books and video games.  If the soulful message of the 70’s was that the world isa ghetto, then by 1990 that ghetto had undergone a tonal shift in its core values.  Especially in the rap game, where rugged, rough and street were no longer enough to keep brothers thriving.  Newer elements were needed as older challenges turned into fresh demands, and the surpassing of expectations became the new norm. The Band of the Hawk rose from the ashes of a former clique, H.TX.  H.TX productions were a spacious affair: all looped menace and blunted minutiae, not unlike early RZA productions if Mr. Diggs had been raised in Houston’s Fifth Ward worshipping 90’s hood flicks more than kung fu cinema and stuck in a Mario Brothers maze.  These early efforts have since been re-absorbed, shoving way towards the Hawks’ penchants for texture over bombast, interpretation over definition.  The current line-up of the Hawks: Noah Archangel, King, Ashtonomics and 3 – succeeds in meeting the audience’s current expectation from a hip-hop group.  Each personality is equally present and distinguishable from track to track, regardless of preferred artistic attack.  Whether Noah raps or produces, or King spits coolness on the mic first or last, listeners know the unmistakable stew that is the Band of the Hawk.Having absorbed early 90’s-era RZA into a heady, Dirty South broth, the latest Hawks release, The Last Temptation, is the perfect jump-on point for any adventurous music listener.  And adventure is key here, as the Hawks’main producer, Noah Archangel, never forgets that boom-bap is a necessary ingredient for jeeps rolling through the valley of avenues.  Hard bop jazz, East Coast hardcore, West Coast backpacker, the tonal explorations of various Eastern musics and the laid-back vocal confidence of which the Chicago masters (Common & Kanye) are known all find equal measure in his productions.  When mixed ceremoniously with video game soundtrack flavor, the Hawks tracks will appeal to any fans of Muggs, Prefuse 73, Danger Mouse, or early Gangstarr-era Primo. A piano loop tickles through ‘Criminal Minds’ as a whisper-beat stutters between the bars, allowing a pitch-perfect King to deliver the vocal hook in his patented syrup voice.  When Noah, 3 and Ash come in, expertly mixed over this web of activity, the magic clicks into place.  All of this happens before King’s exit verse wraps the whole affair super-tight in his grip.  Wait for the dialogue sample that fades the track out.  It’s a telling piece of theater as to where this gang’s collective head is.A garbled soul vocal christens ‘Mayweather,’ so 3’s entry verse sets the track up just right.  It’s a group effort, as King follows 3 straight to the pocket.  There are handclaps and muted horn blasts, too.  Noah’s rap completes the circle, adding humor to the braggadocio.  Listeners can’t be blamed if they’re having 90’s flashbacks, when 40 oz’s reigned and the Towers still stood tall.Speaking of humor, gallows throwaway one-liners drop out of ‘Kill Me’’s sides, as the brothers talk major shit while having fun with the sampled vocal hook.  The keyboard loop is a swirl, and the stomp beat is accentuated with cymbal crashes akin to mid-90’s Roots joints.  A true banger, fun and frothy.‘NRG’ brings an achingly beautiful vocal intro/hook sung by the wondrous Posh Tash.  Her voice, breathy and direct, is a showstopper.  That the crew’s raps can maintain the song’s quality after her singing is a testament to their talent; that they provide a drop of sexiness to balance the remainder of the album’s bangers points to true craftsmanship.  ‘NRG’ is one of The Last Temptation’s many highlights, bedroom-designed and radio-ready.If The Last Temptation is any indication of the endurance of the Band of the Hawk, then music fans should look forward to revisiting this keeper later in the century, as the Hawks will undoubtedly be unveiling a new release. ” - Music Eye Reviews

SKOPE MAGAZINE REVIEWS NOAH ARCHANGEL "THRU THE LOOKING GLASS March 10, 2015  http://skopemag.com/2015/03/02/noah-archangel-thru-the-looking-glass Thru the Looking Glass uses a wide variety of samples to offer a reflection of sorts on religion. Heavy dollops of discussions from the movie “Dogma” are used as are nostalgic sweet tidbits from sounds of long ago. Such things help to make it a unique involved listen. Noah Archangel lets the songs feed off of each other and as such the album is best listened to as a whole. Pieces of it seem to focus on the desire and need to understand one’s own personal belief systems. Hence the albumhas a remarkably personal sound to it. Audio Listening Link:http://www.bandofthehawk.com/cds_downloads_cassettes/thru_the_looking_glass_by_noah_archangel/ Opening up with “Boomin in Ya Jeep” immediately they state “Damn I love this shit”. Indeed the sample gives it a dreamy quality to it. A grand sample graces the glorious work of “Sticks & Stones”. Much of it shuffles back and forth under the power of a particularly strong bass line that rumbles hard. With a snare drum rush the nimble “Get !t” burns through its track time. For “Rachet Mummy” the song shows off Noah Archangel’s sense of humor. On “Thru the Looking Glass” Noah Archangel nicely weaves together the “Dogma” samples with his own particular sense of melody. “Moon Walker” takes on a more electro sound letting the piece neatly echo onwards. By the end of the album on “Fallen Angels (Intro)” Noah Archangel reaches an oddly beautiful conclusion. EPK: http://www.musicsubmit.com/ArtistSubmission.cfm?BN=82479 Noah Archangel’s work is an interesting meditation on religion and spirituality. http://www.bandofthehawk.com Posted by Beach Sloth – http://beachsloth.blogspot.com This entry was posted on March 2, 2015 at 8:39 am and is filed under REVIEWS. Grynd Seazon & Noah Archangel – Grynd Seazon Dec 16, 2016 | Music0 comments Luxurious to its very core is the laid-back loose flow of Grynd Seazon & Noah Archangel’s “Grynd Seazon”. Over the course of the collection the lyricism is nimble and precise. Rhythms are pitch-perfect as glistening keyboards adorn every piece. Samples find themselves effortlessly woven together to create a vast tapestry of sound. By opting for such an approach the collection feels all-encompassing. Insight into the state of the world helps to inform much of the collection’s approach, as it delves into what has come together to make the world and society into what it is today.   “Ez” begins the collection off on a soothing note. A chilled-out atmosphere emerges out of the graceful arrangement. Flows merge together to create an entire snapshot of a life lived most fully. On “Politix” the song delves into how little has truly changed in 2016. Within the piece the flow focuses on the way that society remains unchanged. For this piece the lyrics lament how these problems that seem to have emerged in 2016 has always have been there, just residing underneath the surface of things. Hope pours out of the light and airy work of “Ride”. Shadowy and mysterious is the jazz-influenced “Roll Up” where the lyrics positively dominate. Percussion takes a more playful style on the carefree spirit of “Red Jedi ft. STX”. Ending the collection on a high note is the tenderness of “Mistakes”.   Rather beautiful, Grynd Seazon & Noah Archangel creates an unforgettable collection with “Grynd Seazon”. ” - The Beach Sloth

Grynd Seazon & Noah ArchangelEZ Rebecca Cullen Dec 17, 2016     Grynd Seazon and Noah Archangel bring the strength and calm confidence of classic hip-hop with their brand new LP Grind Seazon featuring the track EZ. EZ a powerful opener to the collection, and this idea of a calm sort of confidence is exactly the vibe you get from it. The music is stylish, there’s a sense of peace about it, yet on the whole the sound is quite striking. It creates a calming ambiance that quickly sets an easy going vibe for listeners to revel in, but there’s nothing overly mellow or laid back about the rap performances involved – there’s an increasing level of passion in the sound of the voices, and this expresses the lyrics and ideas in a way that builds in intensity alongside the soothing overtones of the instrumentation. As the track fades out you really notice the music for what it is, but before this point the voices seem to be both in tune and in contrast with it all, so it works – it flows with a great smoothness, yet you find yourself really listening to every line. The vocal rhythm is consistent, and the energy is superb. There’s a brilliantly organic and perhaps slightly jazz-inspired vibe to the instrumentation that backs these vocal performances up incredibly well. The music has a style and an attitude that grabs you from the offset, and the calming nature of the whole thing keeps you involved, whilst those lyrics and those voices captivate you throughout. It seems like a simple concept, the theme seems fairly common, but there’s nothing hugely predictable about the verses; there’s actually a fair bit of wisdom presented, and these ideas are valuable – there’s an element of inspiration to it all. It’s fresh, and a really strong release – EZ as a track in itself is worth more than a few listens. One for the long term hip-hop playlist for certain.
